Aberration
THE STORY: When Amy Harding moves into a remote mountain cabin owned by her family she gets more than the great outdoors for company. In the dead of winter, it seems that her cabin has become a haven for rats or roaches. Some kind of vermin is loose in her home and eating her cats food. While buying mouse traps at the local general store Amy meets Marshall Clarke, a biologist investigating changes in the native wildlife. Marshall accompanies Amy back to her cabin and it isn't long before they discover a wierd new form of lizard is inhabiting the house. Indeed, the lizards have eaten Amy's cat! The pair leave the cabin during a snowstorm to get away from the monsters, but have an accident on the way down the mountain. In order to get out of the cold Amy and Marshall go to Mr. Peterson's cabin only to discover the lizards have killed him. They have to turn back and fend for themselves in Amy's cabin. After a night of battling the creatures, Marshall is ecstatic to see a four wheel drive vehicle arrive. Unfortunately it is driven by Yuri, Amy's partner in crime. Amy decided to go straight but left with $50,000 of Yuri's money. He's pretty pissed off. The creatures of course, kill him, since he's the bad guy. (You know how the truly evil character must always die in these movies? I knew Yuri was a dead man the instant he showed up.) In order to destroy the lizard creatures Marshall burns the cabin to the ground and he and Amy flee in Yuri's truck...which promptly breaks down in the blizzard halfway down the mountain. When Marshall gets out to look at the engine creatures that were hiding in the truck attack Amy, injuring her badly. Marshall sets fire to the truck and carries Amy to Miller's General Store. One surviving creature is hiding in a wound in Amy's leg. It kills Mrs. Miller and almost kills Marshall before Amy comes to and destroys it.
Come on, lets face it...why do we like 'unstoppable monster' movies? To see blood and gore! But this movie was kind of light on the gore. A few more kills would've helped. For awhile it picked up, Yuri kind of breathed a little life into the film, but I knew his time among the living was limited.
BEST LINE: "If my hands weren't so cold I'd give you the finger right now!" -Amy to Marshall
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?:
1.) Mrs. Miller tells Amy a big storm is brewing but it ends up being a light dusting. Of course later in the film when the creatures are out and about its a blizzard, but the way Mrs. Miller says it you'd think the storm was a few hours away.
2.) I can't get over the fact that once Marshall and Amy discover the creatures, Marshall is more interested in studying them on the spot instead of getting the hell out of there. They know the creatures are hostile, they're unknown and they ate the freaking cat!
3.) Marshall gets upset when Amy kills one of the lizard creatures. He says he needs one for proof they exist...well, excuse me, a dead lizard is still proof, dimbulb!
4.) During a few of the blizzard scenes you can see its sunlight out.
5.) Darwin Award Alert- Marshall ignites a gas line to kill the lizards when he's standing six feet away from it. He, of course, sets himself aflame. (Amy puts him out before he's hurt....hey, I just watched it, I didn't write it!)
NUDITY AND SEX: Amy takes a bath, but you can only see her back as she gets in the tub. She does wear a tight sweater through the entire movie though. (nice rack)
HUH?: These lizards can chew through the cabin walls but can be trapped inside an aquarium?
When Yuri is shooting at the creatures his left firearm runs out of ammo but he's firing without reloading 2 seconds later. (The bolt is locked back-its out of ammo)
Why does Amy give Marshall Yuri's gun? She's a better shot and obviously willing to kill. (She shot Yuri in the head 4 times! Yeah, he was going to die anyway, but...)
THE TALLY: Alas even the energetic scene with Yuri can't help this movie. It needed more characters to get killed! The monsters weren't that interesting or frightening! Marshall was kind of a dork, too. Amy ended up being the ex-criminal thats still a good person....ugh...If you're gonna try to cheese it up with this one, bring a twelve pack. By the way the picture on the video box is misleading. The cover art shows a womans face with scales on it, so you'd think that Amy was going to become a monster. Not that I expected that to make it a good movie...(or a better movie)
